Frederick Ozanam and his young colleagues at the Sorbonne University of Paris founded a Conference of Charity in Paris, France in 1833. He and his colleagues named their organization in honor of St. Vincent de Paul, b eloved saint of the 17th century France whose life was devoted to the care of the poor and suffering. They took as their Patroness, Mary, The Blessed Mother. Today there are over 900,000 members in 133 countries. The Society was brought to the United States in 1845 to St. Louis, MO, from where it rapidly spread throughout the U.S.
The Society has been active in Snohomish County since 1928. The Snohomish County Council of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul began with five parish Conferences. These Conferences joined their efforts in 1977 to begin to accomplish together what none of them could accomplish individually. In 1988 our Council was formally instituted by the International Society in Paris as a member Council of the organization.
